Philippine Airlines online booking: Read the fine print before you purchase!

thumbnail image of Philippine Airlines website screen shotMy bro-in-law in Prague recently purchased a ticket for Mom’s trip from Bacolod to Cagayan de Oro via Cebu. The trip itinerary is Bacolod-Cebu-Cagayan de Oro and Cagayan de Oro-Cebu-Bacolod going back. Since Mom’s trip was decided upon few days before the flight, we can’t find available flights via Cebu Pacific which usually has cheaper rates. Thus, it was Philippine Airlines then.

Studying abroad: An attractive option nowadays

thumbnail image of travel guides and brochuresTraveling to the US, Canada and the UK and pursuing studies seems to be an attractive and practical option for Chinese students nowadays according to a China.org report. This is because of less strict requirements for admission. It has also become less expensive as foreign currencies have depreciated in comparison to their local currency, the Chinese Yuan. According to Shi Jingjing, Deputy Director of Canadian Education Center, with the devaluating foreign currencies, Chinese students would find it sensible to study abroad considering the savings they would get. It’s also an opportunity for subsequent work abroad especially when studying on a UK visa or a US visa.

On business travel and technology

Old Town, PragueTraveling for business purposes is often a must for a business/man or woman. Thus small and medium traders, while they travel from one place to another to pursue business connections or to supervise the branches of their businesses, they carry with them a laptop or a notebook, to be able to work through the internet while attaining mobility. Also, businesses seek a basic web presence to be competitive and to try to improve their market share.

Microsoft’s Bing Travel features airfare & hotel tools plus expert editorial content

Thumbnail image of Microsoft's Bing search engine home pageWhen it comes to searching the web, Google still rules. Microsoft is not content about this though, and now it has recently launched its search engine simply named “Bing” (www.bing.com) to compete with Google.

The first thing site visitors would notice is the visually attractive home page background with a featured random photo from all over the world (Las Vegas cityscape, New Zealand ocean view, etc.) as opposed to the simple and no-frills Google search page.

Travel insurance tip: Are you heading off to hurricane-prone areas this summer?

image of coconut trees at Punta Bulata beach resort, Negros OccidentalIt’s the hurricane season again. From June until November, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that there will possibly be 9 to 14 named storms, and 4 to 7 hurricanes, with about 1 to 3 hurricanes reaching Category 3 status. While the Caribbean and some parts of Mexico are dream destinations for tropical vacations, these areas are at risk of hurricanes as well. Thus for travelers planning their vacation in hurricane-prone areas, they should buy their travel insurance now, as advised by travel insurance expert Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth.com. He explained that they won’t be eligible for coverage after announcements about an upcoming storm is made public.

Beach vacations: sky, sea, sand and…sunburn!

thumbnail image of sky, sea and sand at Jomabo Island, Escalante City, Negros OccidentalI love going to the beach and getting soaked for hours in the sea, but I hold back my excitement to eagerly head on to the blue waters when the sun is high. For me, the best time to bathe with less skin damage and sunburn is early morning and late afternoon, although the tide may not be that high. The allure of white sand, blue sky and clear waters can sometimes make beach lovers unmindful and forgetful about protecting their skin with sunscreens or sunblocks.

Home and office security while on travel

Thumbnail image of a living room, Amvel Mansions Condominium Tower 1 Unit 718 Unless you have a heavily guarded residence and a trusted caretaker, one of the immediate concerns for those planning a family vacation is home security. “Who will take care of the house?” This would usually be my Dad’s ready reply when we bring up another vacation plan. Thankfully we have relatives and friends whom we can rely on to keep watch and sleep over at our house when we’re away.

Travel insurance as an option for budget domestic flights

Bacolod-Silay AirportI recently booked a ticket online for a domestic flight from Bacolod to Manila via budget airline Cebu Pacific and was amused to be presented with many additional flight options. Aside from the no-baggage option which lets you save Php200 off the normal fare if you only have handcarry baggage, there’s also an option for choosing your preferred seat (window, aisle, etc.). There’s also the prepaid excess baggage discount option or a donation to an environmental project. All these at an added cost, of course. An important option though is a travel insurance which covers personal accident, emergency medical treatment, recovery of travel expenses and travel inconvenience benefits. Thus, when buying your Cebu Pacific tickets online, make sure you know what options you’re selecting as they all add up to the total cost.

Designer clothing and accessories for fashionable travel bugs

“Look your best. You never know who you’ll run into.” This is a catchy statement in one of those advertisements on TV and I know most fashionable travel bugs couldn’t agree more. Thus, whether it’s just a short trip to the mall, an NYC sightseeing tour or a long haul flight to London, dressing smartly is a must for fashionistas. For them, being comfortable doesn’t necessarily mean being sloppy in the choice of travel attire and accessories.

Airport security check: Items allowed for handcarried baggage (liquids, aerosols and gels)

During our recent trip to Cebu, my uncle asked me if he can bring his perfume on his handcarry bag. I told him if it’s less than 100 ml, it’s fine. I gave him one of my Ziploc bags so he can seal it in as well. My reply to him was just based from my experience at the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, where I was given a small resealable plastic pouch by the airport security personnel where I can put my small-sized cosmetics & toiletries. The yogurt drinks I brought with me had to be consumed though before I went through the airport security check with my handcarried baggage.

Most airlines provide a guideline for passengers regarding the weight, size and substance of items allowed for handcarry. We know sharp objects such as scissors and nailcutters are not allowed and should be checked in. Liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) are used to be prohibited as handcarried items but nowadays air travelers can carry them in limited amounts according to airport security guidelines.

Here are the rules set by the Department of Transportation & Communications (DOTC) - Office for Transportation Security OTS OMC No. 2007-001 - effective August 1, 2007. I am sharing this for those traveling within/from the Philippines who are still confused about bringing their favorite fragrance or personal essentials such as contact lens solution and other LAGs with them in their handcarry bag.

The new rules apply to drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpastes, lipstick, lip balm and similar substances

Items Allowed
Empty containers: Empty containers such as flasks or mugs
Cosmetics & Toiletries: Sanitary towels & Tampons; Talcum powder; Contact lenses & contact lens solution
Food: Sandwiches; Fruit; Vegetables; Other solid foods
Baby Products: Empty containers such as empty bottles, beakers or flasks; Baby milk; Sterilized baby water; Baby juice; Baby products in liquid, gel or paste form; Baby food powder
Medicines: Essential prescribed medication; Essential non-prescribed medication e.g. cough syrup; Insulin; Medical devices

Items Over 100ml not allowed
Drinks: Any drinks in cans, bottles, plastic containers, etc.
Liquid Cosmetics and Toiletries: All cosmetics and toiletries in liquid, gel form, for example: Fragrance and perfume, Creams, Liquid Foundations and lip gloss, Mascara, Toothpaste, All products in pressurized containers e.g. hairspray and shaving foam/gel, Deodorants
Food: Any liquid-based food products in packets, tubes, plastic or tin containers, for example: Jams and syrups, Sauces, Pastries, Yogurts, Soups (carton or otherwise), Stews or curry

Regarding LAGs, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) encourages the 3-1-1 for Carry-Ons, i.e. “3.4 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.” Likewise, the Singapore Changi Airport guide offers detailed instructions for liquids, aerosols and gels in hand-carried luggage. Being knowledgeable and compliant about which items to bring for handcarry and which needed to be checked in ensures a smooth and hassle-free process at the airport security checkpoint.

Travel team uniforms

Soccer programs such as those geared for the youth provide not just fun and recreation but opportunities for out-of-town trips as well. Older kids get to be part of travel teams and play outside their home field. The away games give them the chance to meet other soccer teams competitively in a different setting. It provides not only a break from the regular home field environment they’re used to but an occasion to travel to another place which can be a great learning experience.

Sports teams traveling together strengthen the camaraderie and unity among the players. You bet they’ll be proud to wear their travel team uniforms on every trip. A team uniform that fits comfortably and aptly designed with the official team colors and logo would make them look smart indeed.

Welcoming tourists at airport arrivals and information centers

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport

Making a good first impression for tourists is part of an airport’s important functions. Thus, one of the main areas in an airport is the tourist information center or booth. Seeing it upon arrival at the lobby makes one feel welcome and more at ease especially for first-time visitors and tourists. A strategic location for tourist information booths denotes a functional airport design. It’s also good to have friendly and accommodating staff behind the booths. After all, they represent the place and possibly are the first locals the tourists speak to.

It’s always good to see tourist information centers that are equipped with the basics such as travel guides, magazines, maps, brochures, special events schedule and other trip essentials for tourists. Though not all international airports provide these publications for free, we’re glad to get ourselves complimentary copies of Finland maps and magazines at the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport. Later on, I noticed that these travel guides can be availed at no cost at any Finnish bus terminal and information center, whether in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku or Pori. Kudos to the Finnish Tourism Authority for making these free information-packed travel guides accessible for tourists.

Advanced research on travel related topics

The subject of travel covers many topics and can range from the trip preparation such as visas and travel insurance, to shopping for travel luggage, online flight reservations and reviews of hotels and accommodation or listing top tourist destinations in Europe. Thankfully the Internet offers thousands of websites to meet most travel related inquiries.

I know most travelers have different concerns and they may need some details that are not usually available on most official websites. Thus, one of my reasons for having a travel blog is to provide valuable information, whether it’s the new Cebu Pacific baggage limit, the schedule for the Ceres bus trips from Bacolod to Cebu or a tourist map of Berlin’s Museum Island.

Organize your digital travel photos

Most travel bugs love to take photos of just about anything they find interesting in their travels. Thanks to the no-film digital camera technology! Thus, after a weekend getaway or trip to another province or even just a day at the mall, expect lots of digital travel photos waiting to be transferred to the computer. Now this means loads of photo files to be added to the already long list of folders in your computer! There are many ways to organize your travel photos, it really depends on what file management system you prefer, as long as you have created a scheme that is easily understood and followed.

collage of travel photos

After many times of trying out different filename conventions that would best suit me, I’ve finally decided on naming my travel photos folders by date and event or place, such as this: yearmonthday-event/place (e.g. 20080901-NationalMuseum or 20080824-PetrinHill). So far, I like how the folders are arranged in the order of year, month and day with the corresponding occasion or location. Some of my older photos are transferred to CDs and DVDs or to another USB hard drive. I also have a photo gallery in a handy flash drive for easy access to recent vacation photos that I want to share with family and friends.

What’s in your travel bag?

Tourists walking along the streets of Berlin

We usually have our sling bags, shoulder bags, backpacks or belt bags with us to carry those trip essentials we need. If it’s a day trip, I carry over my shoulder a sling bag that’s big enough to accommodate some of my important travel accessories. I simply can’t leave them at home while going on tour.

So what’s inside my travel bag? Hmmm… thankfully there are lots of compartments in my Cosé bag where I can put the following must-haves:
- pen and keys go inside the first outer pocket
- cosmetic kit goes inside the second outer pocket
- bigger items such as travel documents, travel guide, small notebook or organizer, sunglasses, digital camera (of course!), hanky and wallet go inside the main compartment
- a small pocket inside the main compartment is where I put my passport and IDs
- a small purse and my cellphone goes inside the third outer pocket

So basically that’s what I bring with me during day trips. Some travel bugs would never leave home without a bottled water, medicine or some snacks. What about you? What do you usually bring for a trip on your bag?

My Cosé bag was also my handcarry bag during my trip to Europe. Note that personal grooming products that contain liquid or gel are acceptable at airport security scanners as long as they’re less than 100 ml and tightly sealed in a Ziploc (or equivalent) plastic container. When packing up and organizing things in your handcarry bag, consider the weight of the items you’re putting in. Whether you’re going on a day tour or flying to another country, it’s best to travel light so you’ll enjoy the journey and arrive at your destination stress-free.

Sunglasses as trip essentials

When going on a day trip, I normally refrain from bringing sunglasses, since they’re bulky for me. But if it’s going to be a really hot and sun-drenched day, I do include it in my bag along with my cap. They help shield your eyes from the harmful UV rays and they’re important when you’re driving on sunny days. If you’re one of those who find choosing the right sunglasses for a trip such a challenge, you can browse on a shopping guide to help you out.

Last minute bargain holidays

Barcelona, December 2006

Planning for an upcoming major vacation should take at least a month ahead, but there are times when the traveler in us would decide on impulse to have a last minute holiday. Usually, the cost for airfare and accommodation would be much higher, but we still go on with the trip anyway.

Those who would like to avail of some bargain holidays at the last minute can browse online at the Global Holidays website, an independent travel agent providing all-inclusive holidays to popular tourist destinations such as Spain, Greece or Turkey. They also provide assistance with cheap flights, car rentals and travel insurance since they have access to top airline networks and tour companies.

Driving safely with clear vision

Unless you’ve got super clear vision, night driving poses more hazards than during daytime for obvious reasons. More road accidents happen at night time than during the day. This is why some drivers avoid night trips as much as possible especially for those with weak eyesight. It helps to drive carefully and use anti-reflective (AR) eyeglasses which improve the wearer’s vision. The anti-reflective coating on both sides of the lenses reduces the internal and external reflections, thus more light passes through. AR eyeglasses are helpful for driving at night especially with the headlights’ glare from other vehicles.

Bacolod (Silay) Airport new terminal fees (international and domestic flights) as of February 4, 2009

I’m back! In case you’re wondering where my happy steps took me and why there were no posts in this travel blog for more than a week, well I was in Cebu since February 4. What a hectic week it had been, meeting friends and
going out to the malls. We also stayed in three different accommodations in uptown Cebu. I’ll be posting photos and some information about them on my next post.

Meanwhile here is an important announcement from the New Bacolod (Silay) Airport regarding passenger terminal fees:

Notice To The Public

Effective February 4, 2009, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, New Bacolod (Silay) Airport will be implementing New Airport Rates (CAAP Circular No. 001-2008) pursuant to the provisions
of Paragraph (k), Section 24, Chapter V of R.A. 9497 otherwise known as the Civil Aviation Authority Act, and as approved in CAAP Board Resolution No. 0158-08…. Amending for the purpose Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Department Order No. 98-1178 Dated 03 September 1998 (Revised Schedule of Fees and Charges for Alternate International Airports and National Airports) CAAP Circular No. 001-2008…

Section 10. Passenger Service Charge.

A passenger service charge shall be paid by each departing passenger traveling in any air transport or carrier in accordance with the following rates except:

1. Children two (2) years old or below, but without any airline ticket
2. Overseas Contract Worker (10.1)
3. Transit Passenger
4. Passenger who was denied entry

Note: Passenger service charge of cancelled international flights is subject to refund within a period of twenty four (24) hours from date of issue.

Facility and Rate:

10.1 International Passenger Terminal - Php 550.00 / departing passenger
10.2 Domestic Passenger Terminal - Php 200.00 / departing passenger

Funny, how my SIL commented about the previous terminal fee at only Php 30.00 for domestic flights during their flight back to Cebu last December 2008. She was wondering how the airport can earn income with such low fee. Well, this announcement is the answer to her question. :)

Requirements for Thai Dependent Visa (Type O) application at Thai Embassy in Manila

This is a follow-up to my previous post Thai Visa requirements inquiry.

Here are the requirements for Thai Dependent Visa Type O for those applying at the Thai Embassy in the Philippines:

- Passport
- Photos, passport size (2)
- Marriage Certificate
- Photocopy of spouse’s passport
- Official letter from spouse’s employer
- Visa Fee of Php2800.00 (as of December 2008)
- Visa application form (filled up by applicant)

This was the case for my sister-in-law who applied for Dependent Visa (Type O) last December 17, 2008 at the Thai Embassy in Manila. It was a Wednesday when she applied and she got her passport with the visa on Friday. The visa will expire on first week of April 2009 as
stamped on her passport, thus about 90 days validity.

Visa processing takes about 48 hours or 2 working days. Visa application is usually in the morning while passports are released or claimed in the afternoon. How about renewing the visa when it expires? This will be done by the employer, the date of visa expiration will be based on the employee’s end of contract.

Postal Address: P.O. Box 1228, Makati Central Post Office, Makati 1252

Lightweight bags and luggage: Every kilogram counts

Recently, my sister had to choose between two suitcases to bring for an upcoming international trip. It was not a difficult choice to make since after weighing both, the black one was more than a kilo heavier than the green one. Naturally, she preferred the lighter suitcase since she’ll be bringing a lot of stuff and every kilogram counts.

Even if you’re not checking in your bags in an airport, traveling light is still the best way to go about. For instance, a hiking trip could become an uncomfortable one if you’re carrying loads on your shoulder. I always make it a point to compare weights when buying bags and luggage. Thankfully, some luggage companies are now finding ways to upgrade their products using lightweight materials.

Web-based tools for traveling physicians

Some people travel for work reasons and not because of fun and relaxation, but for some it could be a mixture of both. For instance, a week-long training abroad or a few days of seminar out-of-town could send one traveling to a new destination with a chance to go sightseeing during his free time. It would make one busy indeed, being a travel bug and an efficient employee at that. Good thing, there are lots of techie gadgets and tools around these days to assist one with his work such as accessing important files online.

Toys as trip essentials for kids

When kids travel with you, you can’t really blame them for bugging you about food or toys while you’re busy snapping away with your camera. They view things differently than we do and even the most magnificent castle or scenic landscape wouldn’t really interest them that much compared to a nearby burger or ice cream stall. I remember when my big sis and I went to the Satakunta Museum with her two kids tagging along. We were admiring the ancient artifacts while little R-jed was intimidated by the dimly lighted exhibition rooms and wax models on display.

The joys (and woes) of travel

Travel bugs have this feeling of joy and excitement when they’ll be going on a trip. Here are some reasons why travel brings with it so much fun and happiness (you can add your own reason too):
- getting to meet new faces
- learning a new language (even just the basic or survival phrases)
- experiencing a different place and culture
- seeing street signs in a different language
- tasting native cuisines (and even exotic food!)
- shopping for local souvenirs and handmade items
- taking photos of the views (and having your photo taken as well)

…and so much more!

Remote surveillance for travelers

What better way to reward one’s hard work and long hours in the office than to treat oneself with a vacation? Just thinking about a one week getaway or a weekend at the beach can make one excited but there are some who would prefer not leaving their homes even for few days of leisure since they worry about their home security or leaving their kids or businesses behind. Unless you have a trustworthy nanny at home or reliable employees to take care of stuff while you’re away, you can’t really enjoy your vacation when your mind is concerned about your home or business.

Baby trip essentials

As I’m writing this, my sister is now traveling somewhere in the clouds, from Europe all the way to Asia with her little daughter C. I know it would be a challenge for her to bring a little girl who just turned a year older. We know how kids behave and they can be unpredictable especially at public places such as airports. So we advised my sister to tie little C with a leash to keep her from running away from her mommy. We also told her not to bring lots of stuff and just the trip essentials would be enough – diapers, wipes, food and extra clothing for little C and other personal stuff.

Car allowance program for traveling employees

In the fast-paced world of today, most businesses have mobile employees to handle the sales of their products, be they pharmaceuticals and medicines or consumer goods, or electronics materials/equipments or gadgets, to mention a few. Travel expenses such as food, accommodation and transportation therefore are shouldered by the company. Especially in giving car allowance, these businesses need a program to handle efficiently these employees with cars, how to reimburse them, such that it is fair to both the employee and employer concerned. This is a reasonable concern for a traveling employee, so he can spend time on his work with peace of mind.
