If I were to go on a vacation somewhere in Asia Pacific…

thumbnail image of Hong Kong skyline…I would choose Auckland in New Zealand! Or maybe Sydney, Australia. Or Hong Kong perhaps? My mom and I have been considering a trip to Hong Kong though, especially since my big bro who’s working in China can meet us up and tour us around. I’ve also wanted to go to Disneyland Hongkong after seeing some pics from my friend and her family’s stay there. Aside from being a shopping paradise, Hongkong is also a great destination for cultural activities and festivals. Oh well, it’s me on a holiday dream mode again!

Philippine Airlines online booking: Read the fine print before you purchase!

thumbnail image of Philippine Airlines website screen shotMy bro-in-law in Prague recently purchased a ticket for Mom’s trip from Bacolod to Cagayan de Oro via Cebu. The trip itinerary is Bacolod-Cebu-Cagayan de Oro and Cagayan de Oro-Cebu-Bacolod going back. Since Mom’s trip was decided upon few days before the flight, we can’t find available flights via Cebu Pacific which usually has cheaper rates. Thus, it was Philippine Airlines then.

Studying abroad: An attractive option nowadays

thumbnail image of travel guides and brochuresTraveling to the US, Canada and the UK and pursuing studies seems to be an attractive and practical option for Chinese students nowadays according to a China.org report. This is because of less strict requirements for admission. It has also become less expensive as foreign currencies have depreciated in comparison to their local currency, the Chinese Yuan. According to Shi Jingjing, Deputy Director of Canadian Education Center, with the devaluating foreign currencies, Chinese students would find it sensible to study abroad considering the savings they would get. It’s also an opportunity for subsequent work abroad especially when studying on a UK visa or a US visa.

On business travel and technology

Old Town, PragueTraveling for business purposes is often a must for a business/man or woman. Thus small and medium traders, while they travel from one place to another to pursue business connections or to supervise the branches of their businesses, they carry with them a laptop or a notebook, to be able to work through the internet while attaining mobility. Also, businesses seek a basic web presence to be competitive and to try to improve their market share.

Microsoft’s Bing Travel features airfare & hotel tools plus expert editorial content

Thumbnail image of Microsoft's Bing search engine home pageWhen it comes to searching the web, Google still rules. Microsoft is not content about this though, and now it has recently launched its search engine simply named “Bing” (www.bing.com) to compete with Google.

The first thing site visitors would notice is the visually attractive home page background with a featured random photo from all over the world (Las Vegas cityscape, New Zealand ocean view, etc.) as opposed to the simple and no-frills Google search page.

Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center: Scenic views from the lobby

Continued from Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center: EcoTourism Park in Negros Occidental

Thumbnail image of sunset, Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center, Bago CityThese are some scenic views overlooking nearby areas in Negros Occidental, as seen from the lobby of the lodge at the Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center.

It was drizzling as we had our lunch, and the views were initially hazy with cloudy skies, we can’t even distinguish a thing few meters ahead. We were thankful when few hours shortly, the skies cleared up and we spent most of our time at the lobby capturing photos and just enjoying the place.

Travel insurance tip: Are you heading off to hurricane-prone areas this summer?

image of coconut trees at Punta Bulata beach resort, Negros OccidentalIt’s the hurricane season again. From June until November, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that there will possibly be 9 to 14 named storms, and 4 to 7 hurricanes, with about 1 to 3 hurricanes reaching Category 3 status. While the Caribbean and some parts of Mexico are dream destinations for tropical vacations, these areas are at risk of hurricanes as well. Thus for travelers planning their vacation in hurricane-prone areas, they should buy their travel insurance now, as advised by travel insurance expert Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth.com. He explained that they won’t be eligible for coverage after announcements about an upcoming storm is made public.

Dreaming about a Rome vacation

thumbnail image of the Colosseo (Colosseum) in RomeI always get email alerts from an airline company about discount roundtrip tickets or cheap flights to Europe and the curious me would eagerly read to see the rates they offer, after which I would sigh and go on a dream trip mode. Even if I’ve been to Europe twice already (first travel was courtesy of a company training and the second was last year with the family), I’m still wishing I could go back to Europe sometime. I still have not visited my dream destinations such as Spain, Greece or Rome in Italy. I remember we used to sketch some of the important buildings in Europe during our History of Architecture class. Thus visiting the landmarks we’ve studied for real would be a dream-come-true for me.

Beach vacations: sky, sea, sand and…sunburn!

thumbnail image of sky, sea and sand at Jomabo Island, Escalante City, Negros OccidentalI love going to the beach and getting soaked for hours in the sea, but I hold back my excitement to eagerly head on to the blue waters when the sun is high. For me, the best time to bathe with less skin damage and sunburn is early morning and late afternoon, although the tide may not be that high. The allure of white sand, blue sky and clear waters can sometimes make beach lovers unmindful and forgetful about protecting their skin with sunscreens or sunblocks.

Will the recently concluded 1st Chicken Inasal Festival make it to Guinness?

thumbnail image of the crowd at the 1st Chicken Inasal Festival in Bacolod CityMmmmm…!!! Something’s cooking at the parking lot!

We were inside the North Wing of SM City-Bacolod last Tuesday and the smoke wafting in as people came through the doors was enough to awaken our curiosity (and appetite) to see what the buzz was all about. It was the highlight of the 1st Chicken Inasal Festival in Bacolod City as almost 4-kilometers length of barbecue grill was set up at the parking lot area. The event was an organized effort by the local government and some private entities to break the current Guinness world record for the longest grill at 3.8 kilometers held by Sto. Tomas in Pangasinan.

If possible, they would inquire about discount packages from their travel agents, or browse the net for big savings on round trip flights, hotel accommodation, day tours, local shows or car rentals.

Personally, I’m always on the lookout for freebies and extras when it comes to travel-related expenses, thus it’s nice to know about an online travel community where members can share the best travel deals they’ve discovered.

Home and office security while on travel

Thumbnail image of a living room, Amvel Mansions Condominium Tower 1 Unit 718 Unless you have a heavily guarded residence and a trusted caretaker, one of the immediate concerns for those planning a family vacation is home security. “Who will take care of the house?” This would usually be my Dad’s ready reply when we bring up another vacation plan. Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center: Going there

Continued from Buenos Aires Mountain Resort, another tourist destination in Negros Occidental

Thumbnail image of road to Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center“Huh, is this it?” My sis and I wondered if we passed by a different route. The skies were gloomy and about to rain as we arrived at the Buenos Aires Mountain Resort. It was already high noon and our tummies were grumbling. Some friends toured us here many years ago and we remembered driving through some zigzag roads by the side of the mountain with breathtaking views of lush vegetation and hills below. How come we didn’t see them along the way?

After talking to the Buenos Aires resort staff at the Administration Office building, we later learned that the scenic views we remembered were actually on the road going further up to the Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center. The resort staff told us that the road visibility might not be favorable due to fog, nevertheless we decided to continue our way up, and we were thankful we did. The photos below can’t really capture the scenic views as we drove by the winding road going up to the eco park.

Creating your own custom travel postcards or greeting cards

collage of travel photosMost travel bugs are fond of sharing their ongoing or latest vacation whereabouts to their family and friends. Some would spend time checking out the local bookstore for postcards to send. Isn’t it truly heartwarming to receive postcards from abroad, seeing a nice photo about the place together with a short message from a loved one?

Incidentally, one can easily turn a personal photo or image into a special greeting card or postcard. Yup, one can use photos taken from a recent trip or vacation to add a unique touch to sending postcards or greeting cards. This can be easily done with an online postcard printing service.

Buying airline travel ticket from Cebu Pacific website failed transaction a phishing trick?

Cebu Pacific website transaction screenshotI certainly hope not! That’s what I told techie bro when he raised the possibility of a phishing trick after I unsuccessfully tried many many times to purchase online for Mom’s Bacolod-Manila round trip ticket via Cebu Pacific Air’s online ticketing system last week. I already used two Visa Electron cards and one MasterCard but to no avail, I got declined status, i.e. failed transaction, for them. Thankfully, our Prague Connection did the ticket purchase the next day using his Mastercard account and the transaction was accepted.

The last week of April was quite busy for the airline site as they were having an ongoing seat sale (from April 25-30 for domestic and international flights), applicable for travel period from June 1 to August 31 from all hubs – Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao. The ticket prices were incredibly low. Imagine getting a roundtrip Bacolod-Manila ticket for only Php1375! That’s even less than the regular one-way ticket.

Educational travel and tour programs

Old Town, PragueAs St. Augustine said, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” So true, isn’t it?

Travel is a good learning experience and it’s the best way to understand the history and culture of another place. This is why educational trips are very much part of school curriculums. Engineering students usually have technological tours which take them to various manufacturing and processing plants. These trips give them the chance to observe and discover the practical side of what they learn in classrooms. Historical and cultural tours are also great for elementary and high school students.

Travel insurance as an option for budget domestic flights

Bacolod-Silay AirportI recently booked a ticket online for a domestic flight from Bacolod to Manila via budget airline Cebu Pacific and was amused to be presented with many additional flight options. Aside from the no-baggage option which lets you save Php200 off the normal fare if you only have handcarry baggage, there’s also an option for choosing your preferred seat (window, aisle, etc.). There’s also the prepaid excess baggage discount option or a donation to an environmental project. All these at an added cost, of course. An important option though is a travel insurance which covers personal accident, emergency medical treatment, recovery of travel expenses and travel inconvenience benefits. Thus, when buying your Cebu Pacific tickets online, make sure you know what options you’re selecting as they all add up to the total cost.

Scenic city views of Bangkok from Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Thailand’s tallest building

There’s something magical about being high on top of a building and viewing the world below, seeing things so small, observing life from a towering perspective. Tall buildings stand proud among their neighbors and they usually offer observation decks or revolving floors for visitors to get beautiful cityscape views from above.

Photo of Bangkok’s cityscape as viewed from the Observation Deck at the 77th Floor, Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Thailand
Bangkok’s cityscape as viewed from the Observation Deck at the 77th Floor.

During our family vacation in Thailand, it was such a memorable experience for me being at the top of the country’s tallest building, the 85-storey Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok. Currently it is the 42nd among the world’s tallest buildings. We had a grand 360-degree view of the whole city and beyond as we were at the Observation Deck at the 77th floor and the Revolving Roof Deck at the 84th floor.

Bangkok’s maze of buildings and expressways at night.

I just stared in awe at the tiny moving vehicles, buildings of different shapes and sizes, curved roads and expressways. I wished time would just stop as I indulged myself with such a spectacle.

Photo of Bangkok’s cityscape at night, viewed from the Revolving Deck at the 84th Floor, Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Thailand

Since we went up the hotel late in the afternoon, it was an added bonus for us as we watched the greyish afternoon skies gave in to the colorful colors of dusk and then we were treated to a lovely sight of the city’s evening lights below. It was truly an unforgettable sky-high treat for me.

Incidentally, there are those who wouldn’t dare go up on such high-rise buildings. Some would even feel dizzy just looking down below. I know somebody who went up the Empire State Building’s observation tower, just for the record, but he’s actually scared of heights. While others would be delighted with riding on glass-walled elevators, giving them a nice view of the city as they go up, some are not comfortable with it and would just close their eyes.

So far, the highest building I’ve been to would be the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. How about you? What’s the highest structure you’ve set foot on? Does going up a high building or tower intimidate or excite you? Now I wonder how it would feel to be high up the supertall skyscraper Burj Dubai in UAE, reigning as the world’s tallest man-made structure today.

Designer clothing and accessories for fashionable travel bugs

“Look your best. You never know who you’ll run into.” This is a catchy statement in one of those advertisements on TV and I know most fashionable travel bugs couldn’t agree more. Thus, whether it’s just a short trip to the mall, an NYC sightseeing tour or a long haul flight to London, dressing smartly is a must for fashionistas. For them, being comfortable doesn’t necessarily mean being sloppy in the choice of travel attire and accessories.

A virtual Visita Iglesia (church pilgrimage during the Holy Week)

Silay cathedralCemetery Church of All Saints with an Ossuary, Kutna HoraSt. Hedwig's Cathedral, Bebelplatz, BerlinSt. Nicholas Church at Old Town Square, Prague

The season of Lent is here again, and this means a week of reflection and meditation which starts from Holy Monday to Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday and finally Easter Sunday. Whew.

There’s been a lot of traveling going on in the Philippines this Holy Week since most offices are closed on Thursday and Friday, a chance for the employed to travel to their hometowns and celebrate the Lenten Season with families, while some consider the free days as an opportunity to spend some quite and relaxing holiday in their favorite beaches or resorts. Thus, you can just imagine airports to be busy this week with fully-booked flights and jam-packed bus trips to provinces including inter island vessels and barges loaded with vehicles and passengers.

In relation to Maundy Thursday, most Filipinos observe the Visita Iglesia or church pilgrimage as part of the Holy Week celebration, where the Catholic faithful visit at least seven churches usually in the evening. In this entry, I will be sharing to you dear readers a virtual tour of some of the local and foreign churches and cathedrals I’ve been to from places in Europe and the Philippines. There are still lots of church photos in my archives, especially the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle, but I lack extra time to search for them.

Let’s start the virtual tour…

Visita Iglesia is actually based on the ancient practice, possibly of Roman origins, of visiting seven pilgrim churches. In the Philippines, this tradition is not limited to only seven churches. I remember we used to practice Visita Iglesia in Cebu on foot since the churches are just within walking distance.

Here’s our usual route which I highly recommend if you’re planning to do Visita Iglesia in Cebu:
1. Start at San Nicolas Parish along Tupas St.
2. Santo Niño Parish in Pasil district
3. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish (USJ-R), Magallanes St. (Carbon market district)
4. Basilica del Sto. Niño, Osmena Blvd.
5. Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, P. Burgos St.
6. University of San Carlos chapel, P. del Rosario St.
7. and finally at Sto. Rosario Parish, P. del Rosario St.

The sidewalks of downtown Cebu are usually busy with people on the evening of Maundy Thursday. You would see parish-organized prayer communities, small groups, families or individuals walking along while singing religious songs, praying the Holy Rosary or the Stations of the Cross as they hike from one church to another. Here in Negros Occidental, the parishes are not so near each other, thus one has to commute or drive from one church to the next. Our usual Visita Iglesia route starts from the San Nicolas Parish in Talisay, then to Bata Subdivision, and other parishes in Bacolod.

Walking along the grounds of an ancient castle such as Vyšehrad in Prague, one can’t help but imagine its glorious past when royal families used to make this as their residence. The castle complex is situated on a hill, thus it is aptly named as “castle on the heights.”

Since it is highly elevated, another treat for its visitors, aside from the historical buildings and artifacts within, are the scenic views as seen from its outer walls. While visitors can take delight in a relaxed atmosphere of nature as they tour around, lounging in one of the benches, reading a book or having picnic on a quiet spot, they can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Vltava River or Prague’s buildings below.

Buenos Aires Mountain Resort, another tourist destination in Negros Occidental

Another notable tourist destination in Negros Occidental is Buenos Aires Mountain Resort located in Brgy. Ilijan in Bago City. Going there from Bacolod City would usually take about 45 minutes but for our group it took more since we were disoriented about the route (it was our first time without any guide!) and we had to stop by and ask the locals for directions.

Buenos Aires Mountain Resort is maintained by the Bago City local government and supported by the Department of Tourism. The resort offers varied accommodation and facilities for day-trippers and visitors planning to stay overnight or for few days. Upon arrival at the resort, turn right and drive up to the Administration Office to settle your preferred accommodation (or reservation if you phoned ahead).

For day-trippers, the resort offers open cottages while those planning to stay longer can stay at the hillside hotel located further up. There are also some closed cottages along the slopes with pathways leading up to the hotel. Those who prefer not hiking up can stay in one of the family suites in a rowhouse beside the Administration Office building.

We came back to Buenos Aires the next day, had our lunch at one of the open cottages by the brook and soaked ourselves for a while by the pool before heading home.

Airport security check: Items allowed for handcarried baggage (liquids, aerosols and gels)

During our recent trip to Cebu, my uncle asked me if he can bring his perfume on his handcarry bag. I told him if it’s less than 100 ml, it’s fine. I gave him one of my Ziploc bags so he can seal it in as well. My reply to him was just based from my experience at the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, where I was given a small resealable plastic pouch by the airport security personnel where I can put my small-sized cosmetics & toiletries. The yogurt drinks I brought with me had to be consumed though before I went through the airport security check with my handcarried baggage.

Most airlines provide a guideline for passengers regarding the weight, size and substance of items allowed for handcarry. We know sharp objects such as scissors and nailcutters are not allowed and should be checked in. Liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) are used to be prohibited as handcarried items but nowadays air travelers can carry them in limited amounts according to airport security guidelines.

Here are the rules set by the Department of Transportation & Communications (DOTC) - Office for Transportation Security OTS OMC No. 2007-001 - effective August 1, 2007. I am sharing this for those traveling within/from the Philippines who are still confused about bringing their favorite fragrance or personal essentials such as contact lens solution and other LAGs with them in their handcarry bag.

The new rules apply to drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpastes, lipstick, lip balm and similar substances

Items Allowed
Empty containers: Empty containers such as flasks or mugs
Cosmetics & Toiletries: Sanitary towels & Tampons; Talcum powder; Contact lenses & contact lens solution
Food: Sandwiches; Fruit; Vegetables; Other solid foods
Baby Products: Empty containers such as empty bottles, beakers or flasks; Baby milk; Sterilized baby water; Baby juice; Baby products in liquid, gel or paste form; Baby food powder
Medicines: Essential prescribed medication; Essential non-prescribed medication e.g. cough syrup; Insulin; Medical devices

Items Over 100ml not allowed
Drinks: Any drinks in cans, bottles, plastic containers, etc.
Liquid Cosmetics and Toiletries: All cosmetics and toiletries in liquid, gel form, for example: Fragrance and perfume, Creams, Liquid Foundations and lip gloss, Mascara, Toothpaste, All products in pressurized containers e.g. hairspray and shaving foam/gel, Deodorants
Food: Any liquid-based food products in packets, tubes, plastic or tin containers, for example: Jams and syrups, Sauces, Pastries, Yogurts, Soups (carton or otherwise), Stews or curry

Regarding LAGs, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) encourages the 3-1-1 for Carry-Ons, i.e. “3.4 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.” Likewise, the Singapore Changi Airport guide offers detailed instructions for liquids, aerosols and gels in hand-carried luggage. Being knowledgeable and compliant about which items to bring for handcarry and which needed to be checked in ensures a smooth and hassle-free process at the airport security checkpoint.
